St. Francis Fraternity, Burlington
(A Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order)
“And after the Lord gave me brothers, no one showed me what I should do, but the Most High Himself revealed to me that I should live according to the form of the Holy Gospel.” From the Testament of St. Francis
What does St. Francis of Assisi, who lived centuries ago, have to offer men and women today? St. Francis of Assisi was called by God to live the Gospel life to the fullest degree possible, which he did by a close imitation of Christ, humbly going from Gospel to life and from life to the Gospel. The Gospel is still relevant in our lives today. So too is the way of life that St. Francis was called to follow. St. Francis’ way is still present and active in the world today in the three Franciscan Orders that he founded centuries ago.
In April 1209 St. Francis obtained approval from Pope Innocent III to found the First Order of St. Francis. Today this includes the Order of Friars Minor (OFM), the Friars Minor Capuchin (OFM Cap), and the Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv). The Conventuals served here at St. Raphael’s Parish from 1958 until 2015.
The Second Order was founded by St. Francis and St Clare for religious women who also wished to embrace the spirituality of Francis.
St. Francis founded The Third Order, Secular Franciscans, in 1221. The Secular Franciscan Order was formed for all people not bound by religious vows - the laity, young and old, rich and poor, men and women, married and single, educated and uneducated, even some diocesan priests who feel called to live their life in the world as St. Francis did. Some examples of famous Secular Franciscans include St. Elizabeth of Hungary (patroness of the Secular Franciscan Order), St. Louis of France (patron of the Secular Franciscan Order), St. Joan of Arc, and St. Pope John XXIII.
The St. Francis Fraternity, Burlington is one of numerous fraternities of Secular Franciscans spread throughout the region of Ontario, which is known as Trillium Region.
