Baptism Preparation Team

We want to have our child baptized . . . where do we start?

First of all, if this is a new born, congratulations! We hope the parents are doing well. Bringing new life into the world is one way that you have participated in God’s ever present, ever unfolding creativity. You have become co-creators with God. When baptizing your child you acknowledge that you and your child are part of God’s plan for the world.

You want to consecrate your child to God and ask for God’s protection over your child and for God’s guidance to bring up your child to be happy, healthy and followers of the Christian faith. This faith is not magically sprinkled over your child in baptism. Your child will learn about the ways of God through your own faith and actions. That’s why it’s so important for you to practice your faith by going to church every Sunday and developing a prayer life in your own home. When your child will see you turning to God each day and for every reason, they will do the same.

What do we need to do to prepare?

As parents, you should be registered parishioners. If you have not registered with the parish you should do so as soon as possible. There is a special preparation for the parents of children to be baptized. Three months before desired baptism date speak to one of our priests after mass to begin preparation.

What about choosing Godparents . . . is there special criteria?

Godparents should be chosen for their exemplary life of Christian faith since they will assist the parents in raising the child to be a good Roman Catholic. At least one of the godparents must be Roman Catholic, at least 16 years of age and confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church. Any other(s) should be of the Christian faith and at least 16 years of age.

When is the sacrament of baptism celebrated at St. Raphael’s?

Our community celebrates the sacrament of baptism one Sunday per month at 1:00pm.

Contact Person:  speak to one of our priests after any mass.
